What is GERD?
GERD is a chronic condition where the lower esophageal sphincter (LES)—the valve between the esophagus and stomach—fails to close properly. This allows stomach acid and sometimes bile to flow back up into the esophagus, leading to irritation and inflammation. This backflow is known as acid reflux.
Symptoms of GERD
Heartburn: This is the most common symptom, characterized by a burning sensation in the chest or throat, often after eating or when lying down. It occurs when acid irritates the lining of the esophagus.
Regurgitation: This involves the sensation of acid or bile coming back up into the mouth or throat, which may leave a sour or bitter taste. It can also cause a feeling of food or liquid coming up from the stomach.
Chest Pain: Some individuals with GERD experience chest pain, which can be sharp or pressure-like. It is important to differentiate this from heart-related pain, so consulting a healthcare provider is crucial.
Difficulty Swallowing: Known as dysphagia, this symptom involves a sensation of food being stuck in the throat or chest. It can result from inflammation or narrowing of the esophagus.
Chronic Cough: A persistent cough that is not related to a respiratory infection or other causes may be due to GERD. It can be particularly bothersome at night.
Sore Throat and Hoarseness: Acid reflux can irritate the throat and voice box, leading to a sore throat or changes in voice.
Laryngitis: Inflammation of the larynx can occur due to acid exposure, resulting in a hoarse voice or voice loss.
Asthma-like Symptoms: GERD can exacerbate asthma or mimic asthma symptoms, such as wheezing and shortness of breath, due to the irritation of the airways. WE CAN HELP !!!
