What is Ulcerative Colitis ?
Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that primarily affects the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It is characterized by chronic inflammation and ulceration of the innermost lining of the colon.
Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis
Diarrhea: Often the most common symptom, UC can cause frequent, urgent bowel movements with loose or bloody stools. The diarrhea may be accompanied by mucus.
Abdominal Pain and Cramping: Pain or cramping, typically in the lower abdomen, can occur. The severity and location can vary based on the extent of the inflammation.
Rectal Bleeding: Blood in the stool or on the toilet paper is a common symptom, often resulting from the inflammation and ulceration of the colon lining.
Weight Loss: Persistent diarrhea and abdominal pain can lead to weight loss and nutritional deficiencies.
Fatigue: Chronic inflammation and nutrient malabsorption can contribute to feelings of tiredness and fatigue.
Urgency and Incontinence: A frequent, urgent need to have bowel movements, sometimes accompanied by a feeling of incomplete evacuation.
Fever: In some cases, inflammation may lead to a mild fever.
Loss of Appetite: Reduced appetite is often a result of abdominal discomfort and nausea.
Extraintestinal Symptoms: UC can also affect other parts of the body, leading to symptoms like joint pain, skin rashes, eye inflammation, and liver disorders. WE CAN HELP !!!
